Festival season

We have just returned from a weekend in Edinburgh, where our son is working as a research vet at a scientific institute. It’s the International Festival season in Edinburgh and the whole city buzzes to the sound of pipes, drums and more exotic musical instruments as thousands of people from around the world soak up the diversity on offer.

Often in the work-place diversity is problematic. Misunderstanding and miscommunication is so easily misrepresented as hostility or apathy. Or diversity dominates to the extent that it is more important to have a ‘correct’ gender or other balance than the right person in the right job. That’s why I find instruments and indicators such as Myers Briggs helpful – because it improves self- and group-knowledge of the richness of difference.

The Edinburgh Festival could be limited to all things Scottish. The international and fringe acts make it so much more. Let’s enjoy the difference and diversity in the work-place as well as in play!
