Into August
There are so many aspects to setting up a business! I guess it’s obvious and in some ways is no surprise. Yesterday Jan and I attended a very useful and fun workshop run by Bidi of Business Link East on ‘Starting your own business’. 12 of us gathered round a table to think through why we wanted to start out on our own, doing what and in what format.
A general concern was money. Not the lack of it, but its importance. With money, you can buy in additional skills, resources, even time. None of the 12 of us answered the question “what’s most important?” right. Coupled with that is the essential revised mindset that time – my time – is money. Ultimately we are selling ourselves – people buy people. So how can we learn to ‘value’ ourselves without being totally mercenary?
Our action points from the seminar are: (1) to write down our business plan. It’s in our heads but easier to debate and spot any gaps if it’s written. (2) to continue research into what we have to offer, specifically. And (3) attend as many free seminars and workshops as possible – to learn as much from other participants as from the trainer.
A whole new meaning to being a learning organisation!
